Drive System
The Chief uses a "v" belt from the engine drive shaft to the secondary drive shaft. The secondary shaft drives the main rotor and tail rotor. The sheave on the secondary shaft contains the sprague clutch. If the engine ever stops the sprague clutch instantly disengages the rotor system to allow autorotation for a safe and controllable descent to a normal landing.

The Chief has a right-angle drive/transmission to drive the main rotor. This transmission has a positive pressure pump and cooler to keep the oil at optimum temperature and properly lubricate the bearings.
The tail rotor drive utilizes a shaft that is supported by six bearings. These bearings are easily inspected before and after flight.
